Unit 6 Reflection

Image
Unit 6 Reflection This was a very interesting unit on Biotech, which included: Bioethics, Gene Therapy, GMO's, & DNA Plasmids. These were very interesting to explore and to learn about. As I said in my goals I did all my HW and have an A+ currently in Bio, but my planner skills are not improving as much as I hoped. Bioethics: This is a little hard to explain because it is all a concept and opinion based on what is acceptable to do with genetics. For Example I read an article on how people genetically engineered salmon to grow to market size a year faster. What they did was insert into the plasmid the genes from    a Chinook salmon and a Ocean pout  to keep the salmon growing all year instead of only part of it. This was the first ever GMO to get passed as clear to eat by the FDA. Although this is cool and great news for Biotech a lot of stores and restaurants refuse to buy GMO products like this one due to disagreements in the general public. This ties into ...

Candy Electrophoresis Lab

Image
We mixed our Sample yellow and red with the extract so this may not be 100% correct. Focus Questions 1. When you analyzed the results of your gel, did any of your experimental samples contain dyes that did not match the four reference dyes? For example, did any of your samples produce: a. Dye bands that are a different size than any of the reference bands? b. Dyes that are a different color than any of the reference bands? c. More than one color band? d. Dyes that you observed moving in the “wrong” direction (toward the cathode)? What might these dyes be? All was similar to the sample dyes except for the brown dye we used. The dyes were not that different though there was some residue that was noticeable in the solution. 2. Look at the structures of the dyes pictured here. Which of these dyes would migrate similarly to the dyes you examined in this lab? Why? Fast green and citrus, these seem the shape that was gonna go as far as our colors that we had. 3. Many popula...

Goals for 2018

Some of the goals that I have for the year that I want to do this year and help improve me academically as well as a person. These will be the ones I set for the year and I will stick to them as much as possible. My first goal is to do all my homework. sometimes I just don't find the motivation in me to do it but I think a real motivation was my grade report at the end of the semester. I want to do this to remind myself and why I do things. The way I will get it all done is writing it all in my planner. This is very effective for me because I get triggered when I have 1 assignment left in my planner and that I feel the need to scratch it out. I am already doing it on my first day and continue, hopefully for my whole life, or at last for the rest of my academic life. My second goal is to spend more time with my family instead of reading in my bed and get some more face time. I love them a lot and a lot of what I do is for them or my friends. I  want to improve myself and in that way...

Unit 5 Reflection

Unit 5 This has to be the hardest and most complicated unit I have ever seen. It is on the Structure and purpose of DNA. We learned about genes and alleles and this is where we learn the foundation of what we learned in unit 4. We apply and learn the coding of life. The code is simple and only has 4 symbols, A T G C. It is coiled up and impossible to see but is 2 meters long and is in every cell in your body.  What was the  Best part? The best part was learning about the DNA and how RNA is the mover of information. It taught me why RNA is important. The only thing I really want to learn more about is why ATP is the universal $$$ in Cells. I really enjoyed the look of the DNA double helix. I want to know more about the components the Histone, for I don,t really understand it. I find it interesting to know how genes are regulated and suppressed. My favorite part of this whole unit was Mutations. It was one of the only concepts I truly understand. I am really interest...
